This escalates to the point that an entire family of Blood witches, innocents and all, are massacred by a squad of Fairborn Hunters, the scant survivors treated as fodder for abuse and experiment. We get to see Blood witches in a "normal" setting, and while their traditions may seem odd to outsiders and they still have a bit of a penchant for violence, the violence only stems from decades of bloody, near genocidal attacks from the Fairborn.Īs the series goes on the sides basically swap, with Nathan, along with high school sweetheart Annalise, basically switching sides as they are pursued by increasingly bloodthirsty Fairborns who see Nathan as a key to defeating his father, due to the vague, dying prophecy of one of their witches.
But the series avoids a stock good vs evil setup by the time our main character flees to mainland Europe, specifically France, where Blood witches have been pushed too after a near total eradication from the British Isles. The Blood witches are initially cast as true unredeemable evil, as all the ones we see early in the series are violent and ruthless witch killers, who are met in kind by Fairborn Hunters.
The Fairborns are the nominally good, strong Lawful witches, who are opposed to the (nominally) evil Blood witches, mainly set aside by their differing traditions and ability to take other witches powers by eating their hearts. This title earns him much scorn and abuse from his "good" Fairborn peers.
The series is an urban fantasy set across the British and later French countryside, focusing on Nathan, the bastard son of Marcus Edge, a ruthless, heart eating Blood witch, and a Fairborn mother. This show has been one of my favorites in my recent dive into Netflix's catalogue, and of course that comes with the unfortunate news that it suffered from the cancelled after one season curse that affects everything that isn't an infinite money printer for Netflix.
